1. A system, comprising:
an implantable signal generator configured to generate a blocking signal to be delivered to nerve tissue proximate a bronchus or trachea of a patient; an electrode operatively coupled to the signal generator and configured to be coupled proximate the bronchus or trachea to deliver energy from the implantable signal generator to the nerve tissue, wherein the electrode is configured to at least partially surround at least a portion of the bronchus; and a processor, communicatively coupled to the implantable signal generator, the processor configured to receive information regarding a patient physiological parameter and, using the received information about the patient physiological parameter, to cause the implantable signal generator to activate, deactivate, increase, or decrease delivery of the blocking signal through the electrode to the nerve tissue so as to have an effect on the patient, the effect being selected from the group consisting of: impeding nerve signal traffic to a lung of the patient, impeding nerve signal traffic from a lung of the patient, relieving bronchial smooth muscle contraction, inhibiting cough, allowing nerve signal traffic to and/or from the lung of the patient to provide general pulmonary maintenance, and combinations thereof. |
