A method and apparatus are described including determining if a received message is from a monitored peer, forwarding the received message to a coordinator responsive to said determination, determining if the received message is a request message, opening a port for the peer responsive to the second determination, forwarding the request message to a monitored peer via the opened port and forwarding a response message to the monitored peer responsive to the second determination.

1. A method for monitoring a peer-to-peer network, said method comprising:
determining if a received message is from one of a plurality of monitored peers; forwarding said received message to a coordinator when said received message is from one of the plurality of monitored peers; determining if said received message is a request message when said received message is not from one of the plurality of monitored peers; opening a port for a monitor node when said received message is a request message, the monitor node monitoring a respective target peer and only being visible to the respective target peer; forwarding said request message to the target peer via said opened port; and forwarding a response message to one of the plurality of monitored peers when said received message is not a request message, wherein said response message is a heartbeat message.
