The present invention relates to an apparatus for controlling speed of a vehicle using an image and a method therefor. The present invention performs an SCC function based on a captured front image of a vehicle using a monocular camera. To achieve the purpose, the apparatus for controlling speed of a vehicle using an image comprises: a storage unit storing a table (hereinafter, an area table) where an area corresponding to vehicle speed and a state of a road are recorded; an image capturing unit for capturing the front image of user′s vehicle; an image processing unit calculating an area of a figure which is made by a driving lane of the user′s vehicle and the preceding vehicle inside the driving lane in the front image of the user′s vehicle captured by the image capturing unit; a road information collection unit collecting state information of a road; and a control unit setting the speed corresponding to the area calculated by the image processing unit and the state information of the road collected by the road information collection unit based on the area table as the driving speed of the user′s vehicle.
