Method and Apparatus for Distributed Display Monitoring

A method for monitoring a monitored display monitors data to be output from a monitored display. The monitored data is analyzed to generate one or more content identifiers. The content identifiers are compared to a set of rules to determine if the monitored data should be blocked from being output or if an alert should be transmitted to a supervisor device. One or more supervisor devices may be used to respond to alerts and may also be used to control the output of the monitored display.

1. A method for monitoring output of a monitored display, the method comprising:
buffering data in a memory buffer to generate buffered data, the data comprising audio and video to be output by the monitored display; monitoring the data to be output by the monitored display; generating a content identifier based on information that is separate from the buffered data and that is located using program identifying information contained in the buffered data; comparing the content identifier to a set of rules; and transmitting an alert to a supervisor device in response to the content identifier corresponding to an alert rule.
