PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device that controls a flow of light and radiation heat by selectively absorbing or reflecting light.SOLUTION: A thermochromic, thermotropic, or thermoreflective filter 500 operates depending on a mismatch amount of a refractive index between a thermotropic material 502 (e.g., a liquid crystal) and a substrate 501 that includes a refractive or diffractive feature 503. At colder operating temperatures, the refraction mismatch amount is decreased or minimized to render the filter 500 into a transmissive state, whereas at high operating temperatures, the refraction mismatch amount is increased to increase a reflectance of a structure where the filter is used, for light at an appropriate incident angle. The filter 500 has a particular but not exclusive application as a temperature-controlled "smart mirror" for use in windows, walls, roofing, and other building materials. |
