PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid consumption device intelligently detecting a sensor failure and the other factors having adverse effect on processing using an optical sensor by using a detection signal when causing a light emission section to emit light and a detection signal when turning off the light emission section, and further to provide a control method of the liquid consumption device.SOLUTION: A liquid consumption device includes: an optical sensor 80 having a light emission section 82 and a light reception section 84; a holder 21 capable of detachably holding a liquid storage container disposed with a prism 320 having a surface facing the optical sensor 80; and a determination section (failure determination section 120) determining a state of the optical sensor 80 on the basis of output of the optical sensor 80. In the case where the liquid storage container is mounted to the holder 21, the determination section detects a failure of the optical sensor 80 on the basis of a detection signal of the optical sensor 80 when the light emission section 82 is caused to emit light and a detection signal of the optical sensor 80 when the light emission section 82 is turned off. |
