PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separator for lithium secondary batteries which is high in heat resistance and superior in internal resistance which avoids the risk that the rapid rise in temperature inside a battery causes the heat shrinkage of a separator, resulting in the electrode contact. ! SOLUTION: A separator for lithium secondary batteries comprises: a composite including a support and a porous ceramic layer including ceramic fine particles. In the separator, the ceramic fine particles are of a lithium alumina complex. The lithium alumina complex is lithium-containing γ-alumina, which is produced by adding lithium hydrogen carbonate, causing a hydrothermal synthesis under the heating condition of 90-200°C approximately, and then baking a product thus synthesized at 400-700°C approximately in a process in which an ammonium bicarbonate is caused to react with an aluminum salt of aluminum sulfate, aluminum sulfate ammonium aqueous solution or the like to obtain ammonium dawsonite.
