[Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] An arrangement for supplying a pair of discharge lamps 44, 45 comprises an auto-transformer winding 10 surrounding the central part of a core leg 14 the ends of which carry re-actance coils 11, 12, the leg 14 being held in position by magnetic members 23-26 which form in conjunction with the outer core structure 18 a complete magnetic circuit for the transformer flux and magnetic circuits for the flux of the reactance coils which include air gaps 31, 32. The coil 11 is connected in series with the lamp 44 which operates with a lagging power factor, whilst the coil 12 which is of smaller dimensions is connected in series with the lamp 45 through a condenser 55 so that lamp 45 operates with a leading power factor. Thus the resultant power factor may be made unity, and the effect of light flicker is reduced due to phase displacement of current in the two lamp circuits.</p> |
