PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect multi-touch operation and touch positions thereof. ! SOLUTION: A drive section 10 inputs driving signals to both ends of each of a plurality of Y-electrode patterns 3Y. A detection section 20 detects output signals VS1, VS2 from both ends of the driven Y electrode pattern 3Y, specifies an electrode pattern proximate to an operation body, out of the Y electrode patterns 3Y, by use of at least one of the signals, and detects a proximate position of the operation body on the Y electrode pattern 3Y, by use of a difference (potential difference) of the output signals VS1, VS2 detected from the specified Y electrode pattern 3Y. On the basis of a position (Y position) of the specified Y electrode pattern 3Y and results (X position) of detecting the proximate positions of the operation body on the electrode patterns, a proximate position (XY position) of the operation body on an operation surface 4a is identified.
