This invention provides a nonaqueous-electrolyte secondary battery that exhibits excellent output characteristics when discharging or being charged with a large current. A nonaqueous-electrolyte secondary battery constituting one aspect of this invention contains the following: a positive electrode that contains a lithium-containing transition-metal oxide; a negative electrode that contains a negative-electrode active material into/from which lithium ions can be inserted and extracted; and a nonaqueous electrolyte. The negative-electrode active material consists primarily of a carbon material, and the negative electrode contains a tungsten compound and/or a molybdenum compound. Said tungsten compound and/or molybdenum compound are/is preferably attached to the surface of the carbon material.
