The invention relates to a method for producing a functional element for flat seals in particular. A functional material layer is provided with a sieve region (14) in which through-openings (44) for the flow of a fluid are freely arranged between threads (34, 38) of a fabric or braided fabric (30). The aim of the invention is to improve such a method such that the best possible seal is allowed around the sieve regions (14). This is achieved in that the functional material layer is provided with a sealing region (18) which is designed to have a tight cross-section and in which the through-openings (44) of the fabric or braided fabric (30) are closed by softening and compressing a filler material (52) which fills the through-openings (44).
