PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the period until the start of size detection while ensuring reliability in the setting of a reading element that reads an image upon restoration from a power-saving state, in detecting the size of a document by using a result of reading by the reading element. ! SOLUTION: An image reading device confirms, upon the transition to a power-saving state, that density adjustment processing for adjusting image density, which is a result of reading by a reading element of a carriage, has been performed within a predetermined period; and performs, upon restoration from the power-saving state, document size detection processing detecting the size of a document to be read by using a result of reading by an image reading unit, which is used for reading of the document, prior to the density adjustment processing. !
