In the present invention, a light emitting element comprises: a photoluminescent layer that receives excitation light and emits light; a light transmitting layer that is disposed in the proximity of the photoluminescent layer; a submicron structure that is formed in at least one of the photoluminescent layer and the light transmitting layer, and that extends within the plane of the photoluminescent layer or the light transmitting layer; and a light guiding structure that is disposed so as to guide said excitation light to the photoluminescent layer. The submicron structure includes a plurality of protrusions or a plurality of recesses. The light emitted by the photoluminescent layer includes first light, the wavelength of which is λa in the air. The relationship λa/nwav-a<Dint<λa is established, where Dint is the distance between adjacent protrusions or between adjacent recesses, and nwav-a is the refractive index of the photoluminescent layer (110) with respect to the first light. |
