Provided are an image processing device and an image processing method, whereby continuity of a plurality of images capturing the area around a vehicle is maintained and the images are combined, without causing any sense of discomfort. The image processing device (12) comprises: an image acquisition unit (21) that obtains a first image and a second image that each capture the area around a vehicle, including a first area and a second area; an outline detection unit (27) that performs outline detection for the first image and the second image and generates a first outline and a second outline respectively; a similarity assessment unit (28) that assesses whether or not the first outline and the second outline include an outline of the same photographic subject; and a combined area selection unit (29) that, if a judgement has been made that the first outline and the second outline include an outline of the same photographic subject, sets the first image or second image area and performs viewpoint conversion, such that the first outline and the second outline in a combined image generated by combining at least the first image and the second image have continuity in the same photographic subject. |
