BIOFILM FORMATION INHIBITING AGENT CONTAINING FURANEOL

It has been demonstrated that furaneol, which is a non-toxic food additive, has antibacterial activity. However, an inhibitory effect for a QS (quorum sensing) system on pathogenic bacteria has not been. It is revealed that the furaneol of 1.0μM hinders QS-control biofilm formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO 1 to 83% in the present invention. The furaneol has accelerated the cell separation from a biofilm formed under a malnutrition condition. A bio analysis system using two different acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL) biosensors shows that the production of OdDHL and BHL is reduced in a furaneol concentration-dependent manner, and this implies a competitive reduction between the furaneol and OdDHL or BHL. According to these results, it is shown that non-toxic furaneol can be used for inhibiting biofilm formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa since the furaneol indicates a clear inhibitory effect for the QS even at a much lower concentration compared to previous researches.
