<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the viewing angle characteristic of a novel liquid crystal element that utilizes transition between two alignment states. <P>SOLUTION: A liquid crystal element includes: a first substrate and a second substrate disposed to face each other; a prism array provided for the first substrate or the second substrate; a first alignment film provided for the first substrate; a second alignment film provided for the second substrate; a liquid crystal layer provided between the first substrate and the second substrate; a first polarization plate disposed outside the first substrate; a second polarization plate disposed outside the second substrate; and voltage application means provided for each of the first substrate and the second substrate. Alignment processing is performed on each alignment film on the first substrate and the second substrate so that a liquid crystal molecule of the liquid crystal layer is twisted in a first direction. The liquid crystal layer includes a chiral material for twisting the liquid crystal molecule in a second direction that is opposite to the first direction.
