Nuclear vinyl substituted aromatic polymers are prepared by treating in the liquid phase toluene, phenol or naphthalene, or their nuclear alkyl, alkoxy or hydroxy substitution derivatives having at least one nuclear replaceable hydrogen, with acetylene in the presence of hydrogen fluoride and a fluoride salt of mercury, e.g. at a temperature between - 70 and +150 DEG C. The reaction may be effected in an inert solvent, e.g. pentane, hexane or cyclohexane, and an inert gaseous diluent may be mixed with the acetylene, e.g. nitrogen. Anhydrous mercuric fluoride, its mono and dihydrated salts, mercurous fluoride and mercuric fluorochloride may be used with hydrofluoric acid, or the mercury fluoride may be formed in situ from the oxide or carbonate of mercury. The mercury fluoride may be added to one of the said compounds and the mixture then agitated with hydrogen fluoride while passing acetylene into the mass. In examples 1 to 5, polydimethyl styrene is obtained from m-xylene, polydimethyl styrene from commercial xylene, polymethyl styrene from toluene, polyvinyl mesitylene from mesitylene, and polyvinyl-a -methyl naphthalene and vinyl-a -methyl naphthalene from a -methyl naphthalene.ALSO:Nuclear vinyl substituted aromatic compounds are prepared by treating in the liquid phase toluene, phenol or naphthalene or their nuclear alkyl, alkoxy or hydroxy substitution derivatives having at least one nuclear replaceable hydrogen, with acetylene in the presence of hydrogen fluoride and a fluoride salt of mercury, e.g. at a temperature between - 70 DEG and +150 DEG C.
