The method involves guiding a region by groups (12) of articles e.g. beverage container (16), in a partial section (20) of a transportation path. The region is tapered in a conveying direction along a longitudinal side (22). The region is arranged by a packaging machine using an irregularly profiled or asymmetrically formed bar (30) and guided in a front side of the articles in a conveying direction in a rear side of the articles. Each article is moved opposite to each other in a compacted arrangement to be packed. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for performing a method for forming a compacted arrangement to be packed in a groups of multi-row consecutively arranged articles (2) a profiled push or stop bar for transporting a group of articles in a horizontal direction, comprising a profiling unit.
