A therapeutic composition comprises chlorophyll in therapeutically effective amount and a promoter distributed in a carrier, the chlorophyll used being separated, at least in part, from the materials with which it is associated in plants. Specified promoters are sulphonamides having bacterial properties, namely sulphanilamide, sulphathiazole, sulphagrunidine, 5-carboxy sulphathiazole, sulphadiazine, sulfamerazine, and sulphapyridine; the following acids and esters: propyl para hydroxy-benzoate, methyl para hydroxy benzoate, para amino benzoic acid, methyl para amino benzoate, n-propyl para-amino benzoate, n-amyl para amino benzoate, as well as urea and alloxan; antibiotics, namely penicillins and esters thereof, streptothrycin, bacitracin, streptomycin and their salts; dyes having antiseptic properties, namely malachite green, acriflavin, gentian violet, acriviolet, 2,7-di bromo 4-hydroxymercuri-fluorescein, sodium ethyl mercurithio salicylate; carotinoids and xanthophylls; vitamins A, B, complex, C, D, E ( tocopherol) K and inositol; gonadotropic hormone, androgenic hormones and stilboestrol; naso-constictors such as epinephrin, ephedrine and desoxyephedrine; pepsin, trypsin and lysozyme. Fluid preparations may be prepared by dissolving water-soluble chlorophylls such as sodium metal chlorophyllin, where metal denotes magnesium, copper or iron, in physiological saline solution or by dispersing water-insoluble chlorophylls, as such or dissolved in oil, in acqueous meda such as physiological saline solution with the aid of emulsifying or dispersing agents such as certain waxes, ursolic acid, oils and fats, glyceryl or glycol fatty acid esters and soaps such as sodium oleate, alkaline metal salts of sulphuric acid esters of long chain alcohols or magnesium, calcium or zinc oleates. For more viscous preparations oil or fat soluble chlorophyll and oils such as liquid paraffin, cotton seed oil, olive oil, linseed oil, linoleic acid, soyabean oil and eucalyptus oil may be employed with or without the addition of a still more viscous material. Ointments may be prepared with a basis of bland non-irritating materials such as lanoline, lard, aquaphor (mainly eucerin, which comprises a mixture of esters of iso-or oxy-cholesterol alcohols with principally oleic, carnaubic and myristic acids), petrolatum, monolene (propylene glycol stearate), cholesterols, stearic acid, palmitic acid and other higher and lower fatty acids and alcohols and their esters such as triacetin, glyceryl stearate, glyceryl palmitate and glyceryl oleate. One or more of the promoters specified above may be admixed with one or more carrier materials to provide compositions of desired therapeutic activity and for consistency. Glycerin, pectin or gum may also be added. Powders may be prepared with a talcum base.
