APPARATUS AND METHOD OF MONITORING VERY HIGH FREQUENCY RADIO USING AUTOMATIC IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM MESSAGE

Disclosed are an apparatus and a method for monitoring a very high frequency (VHF) radio using automatic identification system (AIS) messages. The apparatus for monitoring a VHF radio using AIS messages, with respect to a vessel comprises: a power sensing module for sensing whether a power state of the VHF radio is an on or off state; a volume sensing module for sensing a volume level of a speaker of the VHF radio; a VHF radio monitoring module for generating AIS messages including the power state sensed by the power sensing module and the volume level sensed by the volume sensing module; and an AIS message transmission module for transmitting the generated AIS messages to a vessel traffic service (VTS). According to the present invention, the power on/off state and the speaker volume level of the VHF radio provided in the vessel are transmitted to the VTS through the AIS messages, thus the VTS is capable of immediately recognizing the power on/off state and the speaker volume level of the VHF radio and taking measures for the same.
