The invention relates to a fuel cell comprising electrodes in the form of an anode and a cathode between which a proton exchange membrane is arranged that is made of an ionomer containing an acidic group and can absorb water which bonds to the acidic groups. A gradient profile of the water absorbability of the ionomer is formed between the anode region and the cathode region such that the water absorbability is greater in the anode region than it is in the cathode region.
