The present invention pertains to a method to position a number of pots (20) holding ornamental plants (22) on a bed (1) for nursery cultivation of the ornamental plants, the bed comprising multiple sites (10), each site corresponding to one of the pots, the method comprising providing a potting up machine (300) that automatically fills each pot with an amount of substrate (21) for growth of the plant, having the machine filling the number of pots with substrate, putting an ornamental plant in each of the pots filled with substrate, positioning each pot holding an ornamental plant on a site of the bed, wherein the potting up machine is transported along a length (85) of the bed while it is operable for filling the pots with substrate, and each pot is filled with substrate when the machine is adjacent the site corresponding to that pot. The invention also pertains to a system for applying this method.
