The present invention provides a method for treating an individual who is afflicted with a cancer, such as non-small cell lung cancer or prostate cancer, by administering to that individual a MUC-1-based formulation. The formulation may be a MUC-1 based liposomal vaccine formulation.

1. A method for treating a subject with prostate cancer comprising:
(a) selecting for treatment a subject having prostate cancer wherein the subject has been HLA-typed and does not have an HLA haplotype selected from DQB1-02 and CWO7, and (b) administering to that subject, for a period of time, a MUC-1-based formulation, wherein the formulation comprises:
(i) a liposome; and(ii) at least one polypeptide comprising the amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO. 1 and the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO. 2.
