1. A load carrier for retraction from a rearward structure, comprising:
a longitudinally shifting element including a base segment and an extension segment joined with the base segment; wherein the longitudinally shifting element is guided by the bumper of a motor vehicle or guided under the bumper of the motor vehicle and is extendable away from the motor vehicle along a first plane to a first position of use in which items to be transported are supported by the base segment, wherein the base segment is configured for mounting at least one bicycle, and wherein the extension segment provides a second position of use in which items to be transported are supported by the extension segment and in which the extension segment is positioned at a second plane higher than the first plane, and wherein the extension segment is configured for mounting at least one bicycle.
