A composition comprises chlorinated polythene and a mixture of litharge and a hydrocarbon wax, the wax consisting of at least 50 per cent by weight of a microcrystalline hydrocarbon wax. Paraffin is specified as the other ingredient. A minor proportion of a metal salt of a long chain fatty acid, other than an iron salt, is also preferably included, particularly when the composition is to be extruded. Suitable salts are those of stearic, hydroxystearic, palmitic, margaric and oleic acids. The mixing is preferably carried out in a plasticator after which the composition may be cut into moulding powder. The composition may be finally baked, e.g. at 230-400 DEG F. until it is 50 per cent or more insoluble in boiling trichloroethylene. Small amounts of fillers, e.g. calcium carbonate, pigments and other natural or synthetic resins may be added to the compositions, which are particularly useful for extrusion over wires and cables and as other electrical insulating coatings, and in the form of filaments and sheets for a variety of articles. Specification 481,515 is referred to.
|
