Disclosed are a new, hydrophilic solution based on aqueous solutions of monoethylene glycol with or without addition of ethanol, the method for producing this hydrophilic solution and the use of the said solution in the process for physical cross-linking and keeping hydrogels made of polyvinyl alcohol alone or in combination with some other hydrogel that is formed by ion exchange such as alginate. Produced hydrogels are in the form of beads or microbeads and fibers and microfibers.
