[Class 73] [Also in Groups XIX and XX] A machine for applying photographic film to record cards has two stations ; one applies a slightly tacky adhesive tape to the sides of an aperture in the card so as to cover the aperture and the other cuts and presses the film into place on the exposed portion of the tape within the aperture. These two processes are not carried out in direct sequence, but cards first pass through the initial stage, are inverted, and when the correct film frame has been chosen by means of a projector, the card is passed through the machine again to receive it. The machine is driven by a splined central shaft which drives two main shafts 50, 60, Figs. 6 and 7, and feed rollers 35, 36, 37, 38, 40, 41, 42, 43. The cards are stacked at 12 and are fed in 'turn between rollers 35, 36, by a carrier 54 reciprocated by means of a cam 46 on shaft 50. On leaving rollers 35, 36, the card is fed between plates 55, 56 by rollers 37 and stopped in this position by stops 58. A transparent adhesive tape 70 is fed from a reel 67, past a device for stripping from it a tissue' protecting strip 111, and under a stamping and applying die 127, Fig. 11, and a piece of tape is pressed into place over the aperture in the card by the die 127 operated by the link 136 and cam 138 on shaft 50. Stops 58 are then lowered by cam 61 on shaft 50 and the card is ejected from the machine by rollers 38, 42. The taped cards are inverted and restacked at 12 and the machine set for single cycle operation. Steps 58 are lowered by means of links 143, 144, 145 and latch 147 which projects from the front of the machine. A similar latch 154 brings card stops 155, Fig. 7, of the film applying stage into operative position, the drive on the adhesive tape is then disconnected. The photographic film 230, Fig. 5, is mounted on a reel 170 and is fed through a projector 178 under a stamping press, similar to that for applying the adhesive tape, and back to a reel 171. The film is first fed by a hand wheel until the operator sees the desired frame in the projector. He then connects the film drive to the main shaft and presses the start button and the required frame is drawn under the stamping and applying press and applied to the card in the recess formed by the hole in the card and the adhesive tape. The stops 155 are then withdrawn by cam 264, and the completed card is ejected. The film is then returned so that the cut out portion is returned to the projector and the machine then stops. The operator then chooses the film for the next card. A modification is described in which continuous feeding of film 230 is obtained. Specification 510,910, [Group VIII], and U.S.A.
