[Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIV] A device for clamping and releasing a tool 6 in a rotary machinetool spindle 1 comprises a draw spindle 16 provided with a screwthread 24 co-operating with a screwthread provided in the tool, and a transmission mechanism connecting the spindle 16 to the tool spindle driving motor 14, the latter, when the toolspindle is thrown out of gear, acting on the spindle 16 through the intermediary of a coupling and causing, according to its direction of rotation, the tool to be clamped or released. The end of the spindle 16 remote from the tool is provided with a spring- pressed slidable sleeve 26 connected to a pivoted lever 29 coupled to the armature 31 of an electromagnet so that when the latter is energized the sleeve 26 is clutched to a ring 33 coupled by means of a friction clutch (see Group XXIV) to a driver 35 rotated from the motor 14 through reduction mechanism. To clamp the tool 6, a handle 50 is moved to throw the tool spindle out of gear and cause the driver 35 and ring 33 to be rotated at reduced speed. The electromagnet is energized by operating the push-button 51 to clutch the sleeve 26 to the ring 33 and thereby rotate the spindle 16 to clamp the tool. The electromagnet is then de-energized to de-clutch the sleeve 26 from the ring 33, and the handle 50 moved to put the tool spindle back into gear. To release the tool 6, the tool spindle is thrown out of gear and the push button 51<SP>1</SP> operated to reverse the direction of rotation of the motor and at the same time to energize the electromagnet to clutch the sleeve 26 to the ring 33 and thereby rotate the spindle 16 to release the tool. The electromagnet is then de-energized to stop the tool spindle motor. The electromagnetic means for coupling the spindle 16 to the ring 33 may be replaced by hydraulic or pneumatic means. |
