Container closure having a vacuum releaser

An airtight package including a container and a lid (14) with a channel (66, Figure 5) between the gasket (34) and the outer shell (32) that creates a conduit between the interior of the package and the exterior. The channel is blocked with a flexible member (58) with one end in the package interior (60) and another on the exterior optionally attached to a tab (64). The member is in place when the jar is sealed and its subsequent removal fills the void within the package. The invention seeks to reduce the work required to open the package by removing the force imposed by the vacuum on the contact between the lid and the container.
