The present invention relates to a backlight unit providing a linear polarization source through an active refractive index change layer having refractive index anisotropic characteristics. A backlight unit of a liquid crystal display device according to an embodiment disclosed in the present invention comprises a light guide plate; a polarization modulation film formed on a first plane of the light guide plate; an incident part having a light source incident on the light guide plate through the polarization modulation film; a first transparent electrode formed on a second plane of the light guide plate; a first orientation membrane formed on the first transparent electrode; a second orient membrane facing the first orientation membrane; a liquid crystal layer located between the first and second orientation membranes, and including multiple liquid crystal molecules; a second transparent electrode formed on the second orientation membrane; a transparent substrate formed on the second transparent electrode; and a reflection prism sheet formed on the transparent substrate.
