[Class 100 (i)] A sheet-feeding and registering mechanism for use with rotary printing-machines of the kind described in Specification 626,649, is constructed with a sheet-timing cylinder 11 which registers the sheets before being taken by the grippers 32 of a sheet-taking cylinder 12, the cylinder 11 being a half or other submultiple of the diameter of the cylinder 12 and being driven so as to have the same peripheral speed. The cylinder 11 is fitted with registering stops 38 which are projected through an aperture in the cylinder to engage a sheet forwarded by conveying mechanism similar to that in the prior Specification at a greater speed than the stops 38. The stops 38 are carried by a shaft 81 which is oscillated by a cam 46 engaging a roller 44 on a lever arm 79 pressed towards the cam by a spring- pressed rod 82. The cam 46 is rotated by planetary gears including a fixed sun wheel and the stops 38 are at their maximum amount of projection from the cylinder at about the time at which a sheet is advanced for its front edge to be engaged by grippers 32. The stops 38 move faster than registering stops 19 projecting from a gripper pad 35, and when the sheet is registered against the stops 19 the grippers 32 close on the sheet, and the stops 38 are accelerated and are moved inside the gap in the timing cylinder. At the next rotation of the cylinder 11 no sheet is fed to the stops 38 and they are retained in the gap. The feed chains 17 are fitted with two specially constructed links 101, 108. The link 101 is fitted with a registering stop 106 integral with a depending guide 107, and the link 108 is fitted with a sheet guide 112 which moves out of the path of the sheet as the link 108 moves around its pulley 41. The grippers 32 are pivoted to an outer shaft 22 carried by the cylinder 12 and are operated by rotation of an inner shaft 21 situated by engagement. of a cam roller 37 with a cam. Motion is transmitted from shaft 21 to the grippers 32 by means of a spring-controlled rod 24 fitted with a collar 27 engaging one end of a slot 28 in the shaft 21. |
