<FORM:0617110/IV (c)/1> Dyes of the formula shown in Fig. II, wherein Y is the non-metallic atoms to complete a heterocyclic nucleus known in the chemistry of cyanine dyes, R and R1 are the same or different alkyl, substituted alkyl, alkylene, or aryl groups, Z is aryl, alkyl, substituted aryl or alkyl, an ether group, or a thioether group, R11 is alkyl or substituted alkyl, X is an acid residue, L is a methine or substituted methine group, and n is 1 or 2 are prepared by reacting a quarternary cyclammonium salt N-substituted by an alkyl, substituted alkyl, alkylene or aryl group and bearing in a - or g -position, a propenyl group substituted in b -position by an aryl, substituted aryl, alkyl, ether or thioether group with an alkyl, substituted alkyl, alkylene, or aryl quaternary salt of a 2 : 5 - dialkylmercapto - or 2 : 5 - di - (substituted alkylmercapto)- 1 : 3 : 4-thiodiazol, or by reacting the thiodiazol quaternary salt with a compound of formula COOH-CH2-CO-Z, wherein Z is an aryl, substituted aryl, alkyl, ether, or thioether group, and reacting the product with a quaternary cyclammonium salt having a reactive methyl group. Dyes specified are obtained from 2-(b : b -dimethylvinyl)-benzoxazole ethiodide and 2 : 5-dimethylmercapto-1 : 3 : 4-thiodiazol ethiodide; 2-(b -ethyl-b -methylvinyl)-benzoxazole methiodide and 2:5-dimethylmercapto - 1 : 3 : 4 - thiodiazol methiodide; 2 - (b : b - dimethylvinyl) - benzthiazole ethiodide and 2 : 5-dimethylmercapto-1 : 3 : 4 - thiodiazole ethiodide; 2 - (b -methyl : b - methoxyvinyl) - benzthiazole ethyl methosulphate and 2 : 5-dimethylmercapto - 1 : 3 : 4 - thiodiazol methiodide; 2 - (b - methyl : b - methylmercaptovinyl)-benzthiazole ethyl methosulphate and 2 : 5-dibenzylmercapto - 1 : 3 : 4 - thiodiazol ethyl methosulphate (converted to the perchlorate); 2 - (a - methyl : b - ethoxyvinyl) - a - naphthathiazole ethyl methosulphate and 2 : 5-dimethylmercapto - 1 : 3 : 4 - thiodiazol methiodide; and 2-(b -methylmercapto : b -methylvinyl) - benzthiazole benzyl methosulphate and 2 : 5 - dimethylmercapto - 1 : 3 : 4 - thiodiazol methodide. |
