The arrangement described in the parent Specification for bleaching and sterilizing fabrics by treatment with ultra-violet radiation, wherein the fabrics are subjected to treatment in a rotating drum 71, is modified in any one or more of the following respects: (1) For charging or removing fabric to or from the drum an opening 72 is provided in one of its ends, the opening registering with a corresponding opening in the chamber 70 which latter opening is closed by a door 74. (2) To screen the source of radiation when the chamber is open a movable shield 86 is provided and mechanically or electrically operated means may be provided to actuate the shield automatically when the door is opened or when the motor 81 driving the drum is stopped. (3) Instead of the provision of a movable shield as in (2) the source of radiation may be automatically switched on or off when the motor is started or stopped or the door is closed or opened. (4) Hot air is drawn through the chamber and drum by the provision of an outlet duct 92 housing a fan 93 at the base of the chamber and heating means 94 at the top.
