Heat-hardenable resins are produced by hydrolysing interpolymers of ethylene, vinyl acetate and fumaric acid diesters of aliphatic alcohols containing not more than 4 carbon atoms, e.g. diethyl fumarate. The interpolymers may be prepared by the method described in Specification 582,093, using as catalysts benzoyl or diethyl peroxides, tert.-butyl hydroperoxide, hexachloroethane, chloramine T or dibenzoyl hydrazine. Hydrolysis may be carried out under reflux in a primary alcohol, e.g. methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl and isobutyl alcohols, which may contain benzene, toluene, xylene, pyridine, dioxane or trichloroethylene; or in a mixture of water and acetic acid, dioxane, methanol or ethanol. Alkaline conditions obtained by addition of sodium or potassium hydroxide are preferred. Fillers, e.g. asbestos, mica, carbon, cork, chalk and wood flour, dyes and pigments may be added to form moulding compositions. The products are soluble in hot benzene, toluene, xylene and tert.-butyl alcohol, and may be formed into films by solvent casting, hot casting or pressing. |
