Provided are a method and an apparatus both for treating liquid waste containing ammonia, a metal ion, e.g., a nickel ion, that can form a complex with ammonia, and a reducing substance, e.g., hypophosphorous acid, whereby it becomes possible to reduce the amount of a chemical substance to be used for the treatment or the amount of sludge produced from the liquid waste, to perform the treatment at low cost and with high efficiency, and to steadily produce treated water having high water quality. A method for treating ammonia-containing water containing ammonia, a metal ion, e.g., a nickel ion, that can form a complex with ammonia, and a reducing substance, e.g., hypophosphorous acid, said method comprising: adding hydrogen peroxide to the ammonia-containing water to oxidize the reducing substance; subsequently subjecting the reaction solution to an aeration treatment to remove ammonia; subsequently adding at least one component selected from the group consisting of an iron salt, an aluminum salt, a calcium salt and calcium hydroxide to the resultant solution to produce an insoluble matter under the conditions in which the pH value is 7 to 12; and subsequently subjecting the produced insoluble matter to a solid/liquid separation procedure. |
