A method for balancing air filling values of a plurality of cylinders (9) of an internal combustion engine (100) having at least one air inlet valve (16) respectively associated with each cylinder of the plurality of cylinders (9) and a method for balancing fuel-air ratios is disclosed. The method comprise, for each cylinder of the plurality of cylinders (9), determining (step 610) a cylinder-specific air filling value associated with the respective cylinder of the plurality of cylinders (9); and, for at least one cylinder of the plurality of cylinders (9), modifying (step 620) the temporal opening (IVO, IVC) and/or valve lift of the respective at least one air inlet valve (16) to adapt the air filling values of the plurality of cylinders (9) to be matched over the plurality of cylinders (9). Matching further the fuel amounts provided over the plurality of cylinders (9), allows optimizing the engine for engine parameters such as NOx emission. |
