In a method of refining steel according to the parent Specification by intermixing the steel to which silicon has been added, with a slag composed of lime, alumina, and silica the silicon is completely replaced by aluminium which is added in sufficient quantity to reduce the lime, reduce the oxides in the slag and leave the desired quantity of aluminium in the metal bath. The slag may be made up from grey bauxite or waste from fine resistant products such as silico-alumina bricks. The metal may be refined to .03 per cent C. and slagged, aluminium added and the metal poured rapidly into a laddle containing molten synthetic slag. The method is stated to produce a metal low in manganese, sulphur and carbon and which is easily rolled.
|
