A lithium-sulfur electrochemical cell such as a battery comprises an electrolyte and/or separator including a strontium additive, which reduces sulfur-containing deposits on the battery anode, thereby providing a battery with relatively high energy density and good partial discharge performance. The cell also comprises an anode including lithium and a cathode including sulfur. The electrolyte is preferably non-aqueous, and may comprise one or more organic solvents. The cathode may further include an electron conducting material such as carbon black, graphite, carbon fibre, graphene and carbon nanotubes. The Sr additive may be one of a number of Sr salts such as strontium halides, strontium hydroxide, strontium carbonate, strontium nitrate, but is most preferably SrI2. A method of charging such a cell is also disclosed, the method comprising supplying electrical energy to the Li-S cell at a constant current, monitoring the voltage during charging, and terminating the charge when the monitored voltage is in the range of about 2.1 to 3.0 volts. |
