When axes are projected to a reference surface perpendicular in the thickness direction of a liquid crystal layer, a rotational angle &phgr;0 of an alignment axis of a liquid crystal layer from a reference direction on the reference surface, a rotational angle &phgr;1 of a transmission axis of an incident-side polarizing plate from the reference direction, a rotational angle &phgr;2 of a transmission axis of a wire grid element from the reference direction, and a rotational angle &phgr;3 of a transmission axis of an exit-side polarizing plate from the reference direction satisfy all the equations below: 44°≦̸&phgr;0-&phgr;2<45° or 45°<&phgr;0-&phgr;2≦̸45° f1≦̸&phgr;1≦̸f2, where f1=0.191×&phgr;22+0.986×&phgr;2−14.435 and f2=0.191×&phgr;22+0.986×&phgr;2+14.435, and g1≦̸&phgr;3−90°≦̸g2, where g1=0.064×&phgr;23+0.841×&phgr;22+1.525×&phgr;2−1.46 and g2=0.064×&phgr;23−0.841×&phgr;22+1.525×&phgr;2+1.46. |
