[Classes 29 and 64 (ii)] A refrigerated transportation container e.g. a rail car, motor van, aeroplane fuselage &c. has an insulated wall to which are removably secured a number of separate heat-exchange units 10 arranged side-byside and connected to supply and exhaust headers 12, 14 for refrigerating medium. Each unit is separately supported on a framework 15 of plywood fixed to the insulated wall of the container. The units curve at the top towards the centre of the car, and may cover substantially all of the walls, ceiling and floor. A bank of louvres 20 is fixed to each unit and spaced slightly from its exposed surface to space the goods from the surface and allow circulation of air. The upper louvres are inclined downwardly to direct warm air on to the surface of the unit, and the lower louvres direct the cooled air outwardly into the storage space. After the container has been refrigerated the units are evacuated by a pump 30 to insulate the container. When the outside temperature is lower than that desired in the container a heating medium may be passed through the heat-exchange units. Refrigerants used are salt, brine, calcium chloride brine, ammonia, methyl chloride, carbon dioxide, or tetra-aryl silicates. |
