[Class 53] The plates of an accumulator having lead positive and zinc negative plates are immersed in free electrolyte, but between each pair of plates a diaphragm of gelatinous electrolyte is supported which is not in contact with either of the plates. Fig. 1 shows a single cell in which the plates 10, 11 are immersed in dilute sulphuric acid 13. Between the plates are perforated or porous housings 15 of wood, porcelain, &c. which are filled with a jelly of sulphuric acid and sodium silicate 16. The cell is closed by strips 17. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the plates 18, 19 are enclosed in porous housings 21 filled with free electrolyte, the spaces between the housings being filled with jellified acid 23.
