A system for monitoring and/or controlling tissue modification during an electrosurgical procedure is disclosed. The system includes a sensor module and a control module operatively coupled to the sensor module and configured to control the delivery of electrosurgical energy to tissue based on information provided by the sensor module. The sensor module further includes at least one optical source configured to generate light and at least one optical detector configured to analyze a portion of the light transmitted through, and/or reflected from, the tissue.

1. A system for monitoring and/or controlling tissue modification during an electrosurgical procedure, comprising:
a sensor module including:
at least one optical source configured to generate light; andat least one optical detector configured to analyze a portion of the light transmitted through the tissue; and a control module operatively coupled to the sensor module and configured to control the delivery of electrosurgical energy to tissue based on information provided by the sensor module, wherein the control module uses a closed-loop control loop that includes an inner control loop configuration for controlling a first set of variables, the first set of variables selectively used to derive a second set of variables and an outer control loop configuration providing additional control of a subset of at least one of the first and second sets of variables of the inner control loop.
