PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating method and a coating device which does not eject coating liquid to a belt-like body and, moreover, performs idling coating of the coating liquid while preventing effluence of the coating liquid to a lip surface of a die head.SOLUTION: A coating device 10 ejects coating liquid 13 from a die head 14 and applies the coating liquid 13 onto the surface of a metal foil 12 moving along a back-up roller 11. The back-up roller 11 is provided so as to permit relative movement between a coating position capable of applying the coating liquid 13 onto the metal foil 12 by means of the die head 14 and a retreat position incapable of applying the coating liquid 13 onto the metal foil 12 by means of the die head 14. The coating device 10 is provided with a sub roller 20 which receives the coating liquid 13 ejected from the die head 14 while subjecting the coating liquid 13 ejected from the die head 14 to rotation driving in such a state that the back-up roller 11 is relatively moved to the retreat position.
