PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a machine tool which has a tail stock mechanism improved in the stiffness of a center.SOLUTION: A machine tool 10 has a pair of headstocks 2 and 12 fixed to a bed 1, disposed oppositely to each other, and rotatably supporting work W; cylindrical spindles 2a and 12a coupled to a drive device; and tail stock mechanisms 3 and 13 mounted on at least either one of the spindles of the pair of the headstocks 2 and 12. The machine tool 10 is equipped with a quill 5 internally arranged so as to move in an axial direction to the spindles 2a and 12a, a center installed at a tip end portion of the quill 5, moving means for moving the quill 5 in the axial direction; and chucks 2b and 12b fixed at a tip end portions of the spindles 2a and 12a and gripping the work W or the quill 5. In a case of a center work supporting method, while the quill 5 is advanced to make the center 4 presse and support the work W, the second three-claw chuck 12b grips the quill 5 to integrally fix the quill 5 and the second spindle 12a. |
