PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus configured to reduce the amount of data to be held in estimating overlap of color materials of an image.SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus for forming an image on a recording material with a plurality of color materials includes: determination means for determining a value on the area of each of color materials to be fixed to the recording material, on the basis of image data corresponding to images formed with the color materials; and detection means which detects overlap of the color materials, on the basis of the value on the area of each of color materials, which is determined by the determination means.
