The present invention relates to a device and a method for detecting vehicle candidates in an image of the areas adjacent to a vehicle based on a camera in the vehicle and a method thereof. The method used by the vehicle candidate detection device includes the steps of: converting the image obtained by using the camera in the vehicle on the basis of a grayscale to generate a grey image; filtering the grey image; detecting an edge in the filtered grey image; detecting an outline by using the detected edge; setting the bounding box including the detected outline as a vehicle candidate area; extracting the outline of another vehicle satisfying the conditions set in advance by using the location, size, and aspect ratio of the vehicle candidate area; and storing the extracted vehicle outline in a vehicle candidate list and determining whether the extracted vehicle outline corresponds to a real vehicle or not.
