A process for adjusting the wettability property of a plurality of on-demand activation-type microcapsules of a core and shell structure including the steps of: (a) providing a plurality of microcapsules of a core and shell structure, wherein the shell includes a polymeric matrix containing a certain amount of unreacted functionalizable reactive electrophiles covalently bonded to the surface of the wall of the shell of the microcapsules; and (b) contacting the plurality of microcapsules of step (a) with a certain amount of nucleophiles; wherein the nucleophiles are adapted to react with the electrophiles; and wherein the nucleophiles are adapted to modify the wettability property of the microcapsules' shell structure to a predetermined degree of hydrophilicity or solvent compatibility.

1. A process for adjusting the wettability property of a plurality of on-demand activation-type microcapsules of a core and shell structure comprising the steps of:
(a) providing a plurality of microcapsules of a core and shell structure, wherein the shell comprises a polymeric matrix containing unreacted functionalizable reactive electrophiles covalently bonded to the surface of the wall of the shell of the microcapsules; and (b) contacting the plurality of microcapsules of step (a) with nucleophiles adapted to react with the electrophiles and wherein the nucleophiles are adapted to modify the wettability property of the microcapsules to a predetermined degree of hydrophilicity or solvent compatibility anywhere in the range of from 100 percent hydrophobicity to 100 percent hydrophilicity.
