A system for determining characteristics of traveling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs) and providing real time mapping of corresponding ionospheric perturbations, comprising: a first transmitter configured to emit a first signal at a first frequency; a second transmitter configured to emit a second signal at the first frequency shifted by a first shift amount; a third transmitter configured to emit a third signal at the first frequency shifted by a second shift amount; a receiver configured to receive a reflected first signal from an ionosphere, reflected second signal from the ionosphere, and reflected third signal from the ionosphere, wherein the reflected first signal, reflected second signal and reflected third signal include induced Doppler shifts caused by traveling ionospheric disturbances; and a server in communication with the receiver configured to process the first reflected signal, second reflected signal, and third reflected signal and generate the real time three dimensional mapping of corresponding ionospheric perturbations.
