A charging unit for a self-propelled electric vacuum cleaner for charging the battery of a self-propelled electric vacuum cleaner that runs on the floor on the basis of outputs from an infrared beam reflection-type floor detection sensor and an infrared beam detection sensor. The unit is characterized in: being provided with an infrared beam-transmitting unit for emitting an infrared beam for indicating the return path and infrared beam-absorbing parts; and the infrared beam-transmitting unit and the infrared beam-absorbing parts being set so that the vacuum cleaner is able to return to the charging unit by detecting the infrared beam with the infrared beam detection sensor and detecting the infrared beam-absorbing parts with the floor detection sensor.
