1. A method of treating a saccharide-containing composition comprising contacting a composition containing a saccharide with a compound of formula (I) or a salt thereofwherein
(1) R1-R4 are the same or different and each is independently selected from —H, -M, C1-C8 alkyl, C2-C8 alkenyl, C3-C6 cycloalkyl, aryl, heteroaryl, alkylene oxide, oligoalkylene oxide, polyalkylene oxide, —R7OR8, —R7OM, —CONH2, —R7CONH2, —CONHOH, —R7CONHOH, —C(O)OR7, —R8C(O)OR7, —C(O)OM, —R7C(O)OM, —C(O)R7, —R8C(O)R7, —C(O)N(R7)R8, —R9C(O)N(R7)R8, —C(O)NR7SO2N(R8)R9, —R10C(O)NR7SO2N(R8)R9, —R7PO4, —R7PO(OH)2, —R7PO(OH)(OR8), —R7PO(OR8)2, —R7SO3H, —R7SO2NR8OH, —R7SR8, —R7SOR8, —R7SO2R8, —R7SO2NR8(R9), —R7SO2NR8CON(R9)R10, —R7NO2, —R7NR8R9, —R7NR8C(O)R9, —R7N(R8)C(O)R9, —R7NR8SO2R9, —R7N(R8)SO2R9, —R7NR8R9R10M, K7K8M, and any of the foregoing groups other than —H that is optionally substituted; or any two of R1-R4 taken together is a divalent counterion, and the other two of R1-R4 is defined as in (1); or any three of R1-R4 taken together is a trivalent counterion, and the other one of R1-R4 is defined as in (1); or any two of R1-R4 taken together is a divalent counterion, and the other two of R1-R4 is the same or a different divalent counterion; or all of R1-R4 taken together is a tetravalent counterion; (2) each X is the same or different and each is independently selected from —H, —OH, C1-C8 alkyl, C2-C8 alkenyl, C3-C6 cycloalkyl, aryl, heteroaryl, alkylene oxide, oligoalkylene oxide, polyalkylene oxide, heterocycloalkyl, C1-C8 haloalkyl, halo, —CN, —R7CN, —NO2, —R7NO2, —OR7, —R7OR8, —OR7OR8, —OM, —R7OM, —CONH2, —R7CONH2, —CONHOH, —R7CONHOH, —C(O)OR7, —R8C(O)OR7, —C(O)OM, —R7C(O)OM, —C(O)R7, —R8C(O)R7, —C(O)N(R7)R8, —R9C(O)N(R7)R8, —C(O)NR7SO2N(R8)R9, —R10C(O)NR7SO2N(R8)R9, —PO4, —R7PO4, —PO(OH)2, —R7PO(OH)2, —PO(OH)(OR7), —R8PO(OH)(OR7), —PO(OR7)2, —R8PO(OR7)2, —SO3H, —SO3M, —R7SO3H, —R7SO3M, —R7SO3R8, —SO2NR7OH, —R8SO2NR7OH, —SR7, —R8SR7, —SOR7, —R8SOR7, —SO2R7, —R8SO2R7, —SO2NR7(R8), —R9SO2NR7(R8), —SO2NR7CON(R8)R9, —R10SO2NR7CON(R8)R9, —NR7R8, —R9NR7R8, —NR7C(O)R8, —R9NR7C(O)R8, —N(R7)C(O)R8, —R9N(R7)C(O)R8, —NR7SO2R8, —R9NR7SO2R8, —N(R7)SO2R8, —R9N(R7)SO2R8, —NR7R8R9M, —R10NR7R8R9M, and any of the foregoing groups other than —H that is optionally substituted; or two X substituents can be taken together with the carbon atoms to which they are attached to form a 5- or 6-membered aryl, cycloalkyl or heterocycloalkyl comprising 1 or 2 heteroatoms selected from the group consisting of N, O, and S; and (3) R7, R8, R9, and R10 are the same or different and each is independently selected from —H, C1-C8 alkyl, C3-C6 cycloalkyl, aryl, heteroaryl, alkylene oxide, oligoalkylene oxide, polyalkylene oxide, and any of the foregoing groups other than —H that is optionally substituted; and (4) M is a monovalent counterion; and (5) n is 0 or an integer of 1 to 4. |
